S.M.A.R.T. Goals are Cancelled.

BOOK REVIEW.

S.M.A.R.T goals are probably one of the most widely recognized business strategies out there. CEOs, corporate gurus, and every darn good business coach will guide you in this direction for goal setting. Why? Because S.M.A.R.T. goals make sense. They really do.

Hold on tight though…

If you are a Christian and you’ve ever defined S.M.A.R.T goals for yourself or your business, get ready to retire everything you thought you knew about goals. In her latest book, “The Kingdom Driven Entrepreneur’s Guide to Goal Setting”, Shae Bynes will totally shift your perspective.

S.M.A.R.T is an acronym that details all the elements your goal needs for the greatest success. According to this popular strategy, goals should be:

  • Specific: Be very clear about what you want to achieve.

  • Measurable: Set parameters that you can measure. How many? How much? Etc.

  • Achievable (or realistic): Create a stretch for yourself but make it an outcome you can actually foresee.

  • Relevant: It fits within the overall business goal.

  • Time Related: How long will this goal take? When will it be realized?

Bynes beautifully articulates how setting “Achievable/Realistic” goals is slightly problematic for Christian entrepreneurs. When we set goals that are clearly within view, we close out the element of our faith in Ephesians 3:20 which states “God can do exceedingly, abundantly above all that we can ask or think”. Setting goals that are clearly achievable doesn’t allow room for our limitless God to do His thing!

God is also not bound by time in the way that we are. This means our “Time Related” goals may need a heavenly tune-up too. I imagine when we determine how long something should take, God simply laughs at us. Bynes lays out a 30/60/90 day goal setting strategy that guides us on how to incorporate prayer and course-correct as God gives new direction for us and our business.

Should we set goals? Absolutely yes! This book introduces a new model for setting goals that are not only smart but also aligned with our limitless God and set us up for transformative outcomes. This prescription for goal setting allows room for the Father to quite literally blow your mind!

At a concise 50 pages, The Kingdom Driven Entrepreneur’s Guide to Goal Setting is packed with scripture, prayer strategies, and many wise nuggets to help you partner with God in your business. This is a bite-sized, power-punch book every Christian business owner/entrepreneur must read.
